Music from all over the world
24.10.2014If you need a good dose of jazz and world music to cheer up your life, Tampere is the place to be. The 33rd annual Tampere Jazz Happening is held between the 30th of October and 2nd of November. The nights might be dark but the music will be bright.
Tampere Jazz Happening brings together a wide array of jazz genres, including musicians from metropolitan India to the Sahara desert and styles from smooth grooves to stormy free jazz. A quick glance at the programme reveals that this year there is going to be plenty of Norwegian jazz, thanks to the vivid jazz scene in Norway.
– I visited Nattjazz festival in Norway a couple of years ago, and decided there and then that we are going to have a "Norwegian jazz invasion" in Tampere, says Artistic Director Juhamatti Kauppinen, who is in charge of the event's programming.
There are five different Norwegian groups performing over the four days of the festival. You'll get your first taste of the Norwegians easily: Elephant9 & Reine Fiske are performing at the free opening concert on Thursday evening.
Altogether there will be 23 line-ups in the festival from all over the world – and some of the artists will leave Tampere with an experience that no other jazz festival can provide.
– There is a public sauna in Rauhaniemi by the lake Näsijärvi, and we have taken many of our international artists there for sauna and maybe a dip in the cool lake. The ones that have had the courage to try that have been deeply impressed, says Kauppinen.
Now, who is going to sauna this year? Have a look at the programme and take your guess!
