AirBaltic opens a new base in Tampere
16.12.2021Latvian airline airBaltic has announced that as of May 2022 it will open a new base in Tampere. Tampere-Pirkkala will be airBaltic's first non-Baltic base airport and it will fly three times a week to Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Munich and Oslo, and twice a week to Málaga and Rhodes. In addition airBaltic will continue operations to Riga.
– We have been performing direct flights from Tampere to Riga for almost five years now. Our decision to open a new base in Tampere shows our strong commitment to this city, and will offer more convenient and affordable travel options for many Finnish passengers, says Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic.
– Tampere's growth and attractiveness have made it the second metropolis in Finland. The only real growth corridor in Finland formed by Tampere and Helsinki continues to strengthen. Now they both provide seamless connections to the world. Direct flights to Europe ensure the success and development of the Tampere metropolitan area as a center for export industries, the event and experience economy, and research and innovation center of northern Europe. Market-based air traffic is strengthening for the whole of Finland and it is a positive thing for both business and leisure passengers, says Harri Airaksinen, CEO of Business Tampere and Visit Tampere.
Air traffic has been developed in the Tampere metropolitan area for years, and since 2015 in the Business Tampere accessibility development program. Long-term cooperation for the direct flights to Europe from Tampere-Pirkkala airport has now paid off.
